A LEADER EMERGES
In the closing stages of 2007, geotechnical engineer Paul Steen was recognised by the G4C network for his leadership skills and named overall G4C Champion of the Year in its New Generation Awards.
Paul's career at Ramboll Whitbybird illustrates the breadth of possibilities and the levels of support available. A Cambridge graduate whose first major role was supervising the design of the the deep basement at the BBC's Broadcasting House in central London, he joined us in 2000. Now an associate, he has recently set up a civil engineering team to cover projects in Scotland and the north of England.
However, Paul's passion for engineering has taken him even further than that. Further than past roles as honarary secretary and past chairman of the ICE. Further than his current role as chairman of the ICE's Edinburgh branch. In fact, all the way to Sierra Leone, where he has volunteered his time, with Ramboll Whitbybird support, leading the construction of the biggest library in the country — a project designed to help with post-civil war reconstruction.
The G4C judges declared Paul "a cut above the rest", saying that he had "strongly influenced the development of others ...".
The annual G4C New Generation Awards recognise outstanding
young achievers in the built environment.

Leonie's story ....
"There's many different routes into engineering. One of the things I like about RWB is that they're interested in people who've done something a bit different. It isn't only about whether you got five As at A level."
Leonie, 27, joined us on graduating from UMIST/University of Manchester and is a committed advocate for the profession. Last year, she was shortlisted for the award of 'most dedicated Science and Engineering Ambassador' for her volunteer work in schools, talking to young people about opportunities in engineering.
Strange to think that, on leaving school, it was touch and go as to whether Leonie would continue her studies in engineering at all. One gap year turned into two as she pursued another of her passions — teaching scuba diving in Australia. Eventually, her enthusiasm for both the technical and the creative aspects of structural engineering convinced her to return and complete her degree. Was it the right choice?
"Since the day I arrived at RWB, I've been the consistent person working on a really unique, one-off project — from graduate to project engineer, and the client's main daily contact. The exposure has been fantastic, a real challenge and really positive. Going forward, there's so much exciting work going on that I don't want to miss out on any of it!"
Pierre-Edouard's story ....
Pierre-Edouard, 24, always knew that he wanted to qualify in a field that would allow him to work abroad. He started early, with a six-month internship at Ramboll Whitbybird’s London office as part of his engineering degree. Not only did the work of our infrastructure team interest him and match the criteria required by his French university, but he found our whole approach welcoming.
"I felt that Ramboll Whitbybird was happy to attract different sorts of people and people from different cultures. I've found them very willing to help with details, like the requirements of my university. Now they're helping me on the course to Chartership, which is something really new for me — it's completely different from France."
Simon's story ....
After graduating from the University of Manchester, Simon, 27, thought he'd like to see something of the world before continuing with his career. By the time he approached us for a job, he’d taken more than two years out, mainly living in Japan — in fact, he had not been sure whether he would come back.
"I think some engineering consultancies were a bit put off by the time I'd taken after uni, but at RWB I got an interview with one of the principal directors. He was really interested in everything I'd done! The company felt really people-orientated: they were after decent, interesting people and the whole interview process was geared up for that."
